When I think about the paintings I made between 1990 and 2000, when I was in my thirties, I imagine a practice found in ballroom dancing called “Back-Leading”. In this conceptual scenario, I am dancing with time and memory and I am trying to follow. “Back-leading” is a process whereby a follower is executing steps without waiting for, or contrary to the leader. Moving backwards through time with little or no hindsight but still trying to control the outcome. Any attempt to control the workings of time and memory is a type of hijacking. Hijacking is an actual reversal of roles, switching time for memory and memory for desire, meaning that the hijacker leads the leader and takes control of the dance.
