We will be shutting down Avenue of Flags for the day so we can bike, skate, walk, play, dance and discover active movement in the streets! This is free event!
Open Streets events promote community wellness by creating a safe, temporary, car-free space on roads, opening them up as a public park for a day.
Part of an international open streets movement happening in many cities throughout the U.S., Canada, and around the world, the first open streets initiative was called Ciclovía, or “bikeway” in Spanish. Ciclovía started in Bogotá, Colombia and now draws over 1.5 million people to walk, bike, skate and enjoy more than 70 miles of streets opened to people – and closed to automobile traffic – every Sunday.
But the Open Streets movement is about so much more than biking…
Open Streets is about getting our community active and changing the way people view our streets and neighborhoods. By incorporating arts and culture, we are creating a vibrant public space that invites people to participate in physical activities and learn new ways to improve health and wellness. And the beautiful thing about Open Streets is that it is for everyone--from young to old, from people on skateboards and rollerblades to people in wheelchairs.
Open Streets will be rotating locations every year, throughout our Santa Ynez Valley. Our inaugural event will be taking place in Buellton, on Avenue of Flags, between First Street and Damassa Road. Check back for details on event parking locations and road closures.
